Volcanoes National Park
After a 24 hours of travel and an overnight stay in the capital city of Kigali we made it to the majestic rainforest of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. This protected area is home to the endangered mountain gorillas who live in the Virunga Mountains. People travel all over the world for the opprotunity to see a glimpse of these incredible primates.
Gorilla Trekking
Hands down one of the most incredible days of our lives was when we trekked through the rain forest to see a family of mountain gorillas. You need a permit to do this and only a small amount of people are able to stay near the gorillas for only an hour. The weather looked good so we took off early in the morning and followed our local trackers into the dense green rain forest in search of our specific family of gorillas. Local trackers spotted them and as we got closer we could hear the rustling of trees and the unmistakable sounds and grunts coming from the gorillas. We found them and every moment we spent in their presence was so special! An unforgettable day!
One of the most thrilling moments was when this massive silverback male gorilla came only inches from us. He was so big and strong and being that close to him took our breath away.
We were also very lucky to see a mother with her baby. The way she was holding her baby was so like a human and it was amazing to see.
Staying at Bisate Lodge
Bisate Lodge is unlike anywhere in the world. It is an award-winning eco lodge nestled in a mesmerizing rain forest. The rooms are literal jungle huts perched on the side of a mountain engulfed in dense rain forest. The views are breathtaking, the service impeccable and knowing you are staying in the middle of the rainforest where wild gorillas roam is an incredible feeling.
Everything is included during your stay and the attention to detail is immaculate. We sipped ginger mojitos at the beautifully crafted bar inside one of the bird nest huts and listened to the sounds of the jungle around us. The food is delicious and most is grown on site. At night we soaked our tired feet in the giant bathtub with the open air of the jungle around us. After trekking through the mud all day the welcoming staff did everything they could to make you feel comfortable and cozy. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience at one of the most unique hotels in the world.
Golden Monkey Trek
In addition to mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is home to golden monkeys. On our second day we trekked into the jungle again and got to see these playful beautiful monkeys playing in the treetops.
